Hotels in Alicante look set to prove their own recovery at the end of the first six months of the year, after five years of struggles during trying financial times.

In May of this year, occupancy was at 70% on average, a welcome improvement to the majority of them standing vacant, especially during the week. The official figures show May occupancy stood at 71.39%, with the main domestic visitors coming from Madrid, followed by Valencia, Catalonia and Andalucía. As for international visitors, the UK, Norway, Sweden, France and the Netherlands were the top of the list.

A survey of those who visited the city reveals that the majority of them were on business, visiting conferences or meetings, which is also great news as the business traveller is seen as key to growth as much as the tourist. A major optical event was key to the influx of business visitors in the first half of the year.

The hoteliers also had even more good news this week, as it was revealed that the Alicante and Elche area will welcome 5,000 medical professionals in the spring of 2015, as the Convention Bureau of Alicante has confirmed that a major healthcare event will be taking place next year, with an exhibition of technological advances in medicine will be held in the area.

Things are looking positive for the future of the hospitality industry on the Costa Blanca, and with these off-season events brining more visitors than could be expected under normal seasonal quiet times, the boost to tourism and spending will no doubt inject even more life into the hotel industry.
