TWO AND A HALF THOUSAND CAUGHT IN DRINK AND DRUG CAMPAIGN

The DGT traffic department has revealed that during their last campaign for road safety, 2,500 drivers were found to have consumed alcohol or drugs and then drove.

During the campaign, which ran between the 2nd and the 8th of June, officers from the Guardia Civil conducted 1,059 tests for drivers suspected to have used drugs. Of these, 358 gave positive results, some 34% of the total. Of those, 3 drivers were brought to justice by presenting clear signs of driving under the influence of drugs. As usual, among the most consumed drugs were cannabis and cocaine.

With regard to alcohol, the results indicated an overall fall in the number of drivers who had consumed alcohol. However, the traffic police still conducted 207,829 tests, of which 2,078 were positive. Of those caught driving whilst drunk, 1,870 were found during the routine checks, 177 had committed another motoring offence, and 75 were involved in accidents. Of those caught, 1,750 were dealt with as an administrative procedure, whereas 328 were dealt with through the criminal courts, as were the 17 people who refused the breathalyser.

The next campaign will also focus on drink and drugs, and will operate between the 14th and 20th of July, which coincides with the European Traffic Police campaign focussing on trucks and buses. In August, the campaign will be focused on speeding, whereas in September seatbelts will be the main subject of the campaign, which will also be a Europe-wide initiative.
