The Regional Secretary for Infrastructure, Planning and Environment, Victoriano Sánchez-Barcáiztegui, presided over a press conference in Torrevieja this week, in which a new project was announced to provide new road signs across the Vega Baja which will lead drivers to touristic destinations, thus boosting tourism.

Already highlighted as key points of interest in Torrevieja, new signs will point towards such monuments as the Eras de la Sal, the largely redundant International Musical Auditorium, the Mirador de la Torre del Moro, the Plaza de la Estación where the local skate park is located, churches of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, Nuestra Señora del Rosario and Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción, the Sociedad Cultural Casino de Torrevieja and the museums.

In addition, the Green Route will also be highlighted, along with the sports city and tourist offices, the Paraje Natural Municipal del Molino del Agua, Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja, Calas de Torrevieja, Parque Aromático de Torreblanca, Parque de Las Naciones, Salinas de Torrevieja and both the nautical and sports ports of Torrevieja.

Finally, various commercial sites will also be included, at no cost to them, including a number of restaurants, tourist apartments, hotels and campsites.

Other areas, such as Orihuela, will consider their options during the course of the summer, before submitting their final list for approval in September.

Sánchez-Barcáiztegui also announced that the new signs will include the logo of the Tourist Board of the Costa Blanca, following the request made by the subsidiary of the Provincial Council, with the overall aim of “helping to promote the active presence of the Costa Blanca in the tourism market and promote domestic and foreign tourists to the province of Alicante”.

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment started this project by sending a letter to all municipalities that were invited to indicate which attractions they wanted to indicate as tourist attractions on the new signs.

After the original proposals and consultation, the final draft plan will be completed, with around 200 signs being approved that will be installed across the region later this year and into the early part of 2015.

Barcáiztegui Sanchez explained that the project, which has already been implemented in a number of areas across the region, is financed entirely by the regional government, and is part of a plan to provide “clear and compelling information” on the elements of each area of interest, thus strengthening domestic tourism.

However, one of the most confusing parts of the campaign for many is that none of these signs will appear on the main road through the area, as the N-332 is operated by the national road authority, and, as such, the approval for signs lies with them, which they have already said would not be possible. These signs will be placed on the minor roads surrounding the attractions they point towards only.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón thanked the secretary for choosing Torrevieja as the city from which to present the project, thanking all those who attended from the other areas for their presence in the meeting, and for their involvement “in this new tourism project that will be very positive for our region”.
