The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism presented the mobile version of the official website for tourism in Spain and the ‘Spain in Apps’ platform (an app generator) that are aimed at offering a response to the needs of the digital tourist.

The goal is to maintain Spain’s leading position in the tourism industry in the future, which means that Spanish tourism needs to be committed to innovation and new technologies.

These initiatives are a response to the new habits of travelers and the strong influence of new technologies on transforming the tourism industry. This phenomenon should be seen as an opportunity rather than a threat to the tourism sector.

In fact, this industry is one of those to have been most influenced by the emergence of mobile telephones (it is estimated that more than 6.8 billion now exist around the world), making them an essential tool when organising any holiday.

This is also creating a unique framework for the development of entrepreneurial activity in tourism and innovative companies.

Mobile version of Spain.info

The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism is responding to the importance of these new needs from the digital tourist through the creation and the presentation on Thursday of the mobile version of the official website for tourism in Spain, fully aware that a quarter of all visits to this website take place via a mobile device.

This new version improves user experience with more practical and simpler browsing, faster access to the information, short messages adapted to the available space and the geolocation of resources.

The mobile version is available in four languages (Spanish, English, French and German) with optimised content, images and tools for responding to the needs of travellers.

Spain in Apps’ platform

Furthermore, the Ministry of Industry has launched the ‘Spain in Apps’ technology platform for the development of tourism apps. This platform is closely linked to the Smart Tourism Destinations project, one of the measures forming part of the National Comprehensive Tourism Plan (PNIT) 2012-2015, the cornerstones of which are innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility.

A set of apps linked to various tourist destinations, segments, products and services in Spain were presented. Destination guides, apps for beaches, apps for enjoying nature, for travelling with children, for booking and selling experiences, etc.

The various features include a number of accessibility tools – present in all the apps – worthy of mention, the option to incorporate user-generated content, the design of postcards and the ability to rate the various resources.

These apps will soon incorporate a planner, which will enable the creation of a travel book to help users select activities, points of interest and organise customised routes.

Spain in Apps’ has a two-fold objective. From a demand perspective, it provides tourists with up-to-date geolocated information about tourist destinations, products and services, the content of which is taken from Spain.info and other sources. From an offer perspective, the platform generates applications that enable data to be gathered anonymously making it possible to gain an understanding of tourist behaviour patterns in Spain.

By gathering this data, ‘Spain in Apps’ will enable destination managers to take decisions based on concrete information, thereby helping to raise efficiency in the management of tourism policies and help tourism businesses adapt their product or service to real tourist demands.

To that end, this initiative forms an essential part of the Open Data and Big Data project of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism in the tourism sector, which will contribute to improving the competitiveness of Spain as a tourist destination.
