A seven metre tall palm tree crashed to the ground in Elche on Tuesday morning, smashing into the awning of a cafe bar in the Huerto de Don Julio area.
The incident occurred at around 10:00 in the morning, but nobody was injured in the incident as there were no customers in the cafe at the time.
The City Council confirmed that the municipal parks and gardens department “had no record” of that specific palm tree presenting a risk of falling, and have attributed the incident to “a failure” at the base of the trunk of the tree.
The tree was removed by the parks and gardens workers shortly after the incident, allowing normal life to resume in the area.
A similar incident occurred in the La Mata area of Torrevieja on Sunday, where a parked car was damaged and a lamp post was destroyed by a falling palm tree, although there were no injuries reported in this incident either, the road was blocked for some time whilst the fire service staff attended.
