The 18 year old male killed in Benidorm´s Terra Mitica theme park has been confirmed as being a native of Iceland, who was on holiday with family members in Torrevieja.

The family issued a statement to the Icelandic press, explaining how, “Originally the family intended to stay in Spain for 28 days. We went to Terra Mítica on the seventh day … where the whole family had spent the day. The accident occurred in the roller coaster ‘Inferno’ where Andri Freyr was seated at the back along with his friend and younger sister”.

The family praised the park´s staff for their quick response in attending the scene, along with a Norwegian doctor, who provided first aid. However, they are also critical of the delay before an ambulance arrived, “There was no ambulance at the park and we had to wait for it for 20-25 minutes. When the ambulance finally arrived our son died inside the vehicle, while it was still in the park, and therefore Andri Freyr was never taken to hospital”.

Spain has faced tremendous cut backs in public services in recent years, with healthcare, and ambulances in particular being cut back to a service that many warned would lead to unacceptable delays and, ultimately, the loss of lives.

The statement continued, “All the children who were with us have now been taken to their parents in Iceland to be given assistance because of the terrible events they sadly witnessed. Andri Freyr’s father and stepmother remained in Torrevieja to take care of things and take Andri Freyr home”.

Terra Mitica theme park have asked for assistance from the German manufacturer of the ride, as it is believed to be “impossible” for the harness to open, due to a double hydraulic electronic lock and an additional support that secures it closed under the weight of a rider.

The family have also asked for consideration in this tragic time, and to avoid speculation and rumour, until the investigation is concluded and the facts are known.

The family concluded in thanking everybody who has assisted them in the matter, including airline Wow Air and its staff.
