BLACKPOOL LA MANGA TRIP ABORTED
Blackpool fans have been left rocked – after a pre-season trip to Spain was dramatically cancelled – with scheduled games at La Manga given the boot due to a shortage of PLAYERS!
“The manager has taken the decision to cancel the pre-season tour – we will be able to be much more productive here, than in Spain,” said chairman Karl Oyston. Seasiders new manager Jose Riga cancelled pre-season friendlies against La Liga outfit Granada CF on July 26, and against FC Cartagena on July 28.
And instead of being at the La Manga Club Football Academy the Blackpool squad and fans – due to fly to La Manga for a nine-day pre-season camp – remain in Britain. Problems arose due to Blackpool having a mere eight senior contracted players – leading to Riga postponing the Spanish trip.
“We feel our time will be better served trying to get some player deals. It wasn’t an easy decision,” said Oyston. Supporters had booked flights and accommodation in the La Manga area to watch the pre-season games – and take in a few days’ holiday.
There is discontent amongst fans and Oyston – with the club having a paltry eight senior players on their books – ahead of the 2014-15 season kicking-off next month. Oyston, set to compensate supporters who have booked flights to Spain, said: “I hope we can deal with this fairly.”
Riga and Oyston have held talks over the club’s transfer policy. And Oyston said: “We had a chat and are determined to resolve this situation.” ends
