COASTAL RESIDENTS DEMAND IMPROVED SERVICES

Police had to stop the traffic while the demo took place

Almost 200 residents of Villamartin, La Zenia and surrounds, demonstrated at the entrance to La Zenia Boulevard shopping center next to the AP-7 motorway toll on Saturday, demanding both improved road safety in the area and the removal of the toll on the AP7 motorway.

The protest was led by Bob Houliston, Orihuela Councillor and Chairman of the local CLARO Group, and Félix Arenas who is the President of the La Zenia Business Association.

They claimed that the area, despite being a ‘cash cow’ to the Orihuela Government, is completely forgotten by the mayor and his councilors when it comes to the quality of life for the Costa’s 30,000 inhabitants.

They also showed their discontent with the toll located at La Zenia on the AP7 motorway between Alicante and Cartagena, demanding that it be abolished and with the perceived lack of safety, municipal services and cleanliness on many local roads.

One example, they say, is the road between San Miguel de Salinas, through Villamartin and into La Zenia, which is regularly used by heavy traffic. They claim that the road is nowhere near ‘fit for purpose’ and that the weight and volume of traffic that it attracts poses significant dangers to local residents.

This discomfort was reflected in several of the banners held by the demonstrators which said “Enough of traffic. We do not want to die. “

The residents also asked the Ministry of Public Works and the City Council to reconsider its decision to close the street Alhambra Maestro Torralba and to prevent accidents in the N-332, because the estimate would “ruin” for small businesses and because they believe that this problem be solved with the removal of the AP7 toll.

Residents also demanded the withdrawal of the threat by Correo toremove the delivery of mail to more than 5,000 homes in Orihuela Costa and the completion of the Emergency Center located on the Avda Villamartin.

They say that the Orihuela Costa is a major tourist attraction in this part of Spain, insisting that that the lack of both investment and municipal services currently provided to it from local and regional resources are an embarrassment and they must be remedied and improved as a matter of urgency.
