ONE IN FIVE VOTERS ARE IMMIGRANTS

Following the European election, the data relating to the number of registered voters has been released this week, detailing how one in five in the province of Alicante is an immigrant living in Spain, according to a report by the Secretariado Diocesano de Migración.

Of the 1.9 million voters across the Alicante province, a total of 24.01% were born outside Spain, some 469,417 people, representing 27 European states and other international countries. In 1998, the immigrant voting population stood at 75,722, rising to 450,000 in 2008.

Behind Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante is the third highest province with a registered immigrant population, with the 24% far ahead of likes of Málaga with 17.9% and even Valencia with 11.1%.

By nationality in Alicante, the biggest portion of immigrants are from the UK, with 130,541 people representing 27.8% of the foreign voting population. In second place, with a near 100,000 difference, are residents from Morocco with 36,692 registered voters, equating to 7.8%. Third place is Germany with 35,916, or 7.6%, fourth is Romania with 34,037, 7.3%, and in fifth place is the Netherlands with 17,192 registered voters, some 4.1% of the total immigrant list.

Standing out in terms of location of immigrants is San Fulgencio, where 77.7% of the voting population are foreigners, with 9,862 of the 12,688 voters being none native. Rojales is not far behind with 76.3% of the registered voting population being immigrants, 16,551 of their 21,686 voters. Torrevieja meanwhile has a 53.2% foreign voting population, some 55,989, whereas Orihuela has 39,002, or 42.8%.

Across the spectrum of countries represented, those in a clear minority are from Andorra, with just 1 registered voters, but the figure is quadrupled to 4 from Saudi Arabia, as well as 9 from Togo, 14 from Liechtenstein, 28 from New Zealanders and 29 who have no idea where they are from, as they are classed as “stateless”.
