TORREVIEJA MAYOR ACCUSED OF PHONE FIDDLING

Whilst a number of Torrevieja council officials have recently appeared in court facing charges of using their publicly funded mobile phones for personal use, it appears the lesson from the case has not been learnt, as both the current mayor, Eduardo Dólon, and the financial councillor, Joaquín Albaladejo, are being accused of doing the same thing.

Domingo Soler of the Alternativa Popular political group of Torrevieja, APTCe, has said that the pair spent 431 euro of public money in just 3 days, whilst traveling in Europe. Whilst travelling in Germany and Russia, on official business to try to improve relations and encourage tourists to visit the Costa Blanca city, the pair made both telephone calls and had internet connections which were directly to make contact with their family. According to records presented by Soler, Albaladejo alone spent 118 euro on personal calls to his family from Russia, on bills that total over 400 euro.

In a press conference, Soler stated that the data has been presented to the lawyers who represent his political group, who are studying the implications with a view to report the findings to the anti-corruption prosecution for an alleged crime of embezzlement of public funds. The recent court cases have revolved around the fact that the use of a mobile phone provided and paid for by public money cannot be used for personal calls.

Eduardo Dolón says that although there may have been some personal calls made, the bulk of the expense was work related and accuses Soler of making the accusations based on ill feeling between the groups.
