Thanks to C.L.A.R.O.’s action in bringing the future of Cala Mosca before the European Parliament, there is now another opportunity for all those who hope to save this last green area on Orihuela Costa from the building of 1,500 new houses, to make their voice heard.

A public consultation has started on the developer’s proposals to safeguard the environment of Cala Mosca and in particular the two endangered species which are present and are protected by European Union environmental legislation. After studying these proposals, C.L.A.R.O. considers that they do not adequately protect the environment of Cala Mosca. There are 4 mains reasons for this opinion:

1. The aim of the environmental impact study appears to be to maintain the originally intended volume of construction. As a consequence it offers inadequate protection to the two protected species of flower and fauna present on Cala Mosca (Helienthemum caput-felis and Tudorella mauretanica)

2. The proposal to protect these species by locating them in areas designed for parks, gardens, playgrounds and car parks is nonsensical – these are areas where there would be maximum public access and presence and therefore maximum danger to the species.

3. The proposal to enclose the species would prevent their expansion throughout Cala Mosca which is their natural habitat.

4. The environmental impact study does not take account of the presence in Cala Mosca of a traditional trail for live animals (Cañada Real) which follows the line of the coast and which by law should be protected from building and building infrastructures.

C.L.A.R.O. is organising a Petition to make these objections known to the Valencian authorities. It will not, however, be a C.L.A.R.O. petition. It will not bear our logo and is a non-political action, strictly within the framework of a legitimate public consultation.

We appeal to all those who value Cala Mosca as it is, to sign the Petition. We have only two weeks until Friday, 8 August after which the objections (alegaciones) must be handed in to the Orihuela Town Hall. Signature of the Petition is open to all those who wish to limit building on this site. It is not necessary to be a resident of Orihuela Costa. Many visitors and tourists value Cala Mosca and are eligible to sign, as are those living elsewhere in Orihuela or in the Vega Baja area. A minimum of personal information is requested when signing the form but basically name and signature will suffice.

All those interested in signing the Petition may do so at the Asturias Restaurant (downstairs near entry) from Monday – Friday this week and next between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. until 8 August. Copies of the Petition form can also be obtained for those who wish to collect signatures on behalf of the cause and subsequently hand them over to us so they can be presented together at the beginning of the week 11 August. Volunteers will also be collecting signatures at key points on Orihuela Costa during this period. Copies of the form can also be downloaded from the new C.L.A.R.O. WEBPAGE www.claro-orihuelacosta.com. When signed downloaded forms can be handed in directly to the Orihuela Town Hall or given to C.L.A.R.O. so they can be delivered together.

We urge as many people as possible to sign the Petition. In previous Petitions to Save Cala Mosca we have collected 7,000 signatures and 1,000 have responded to a questionnaire regarding what are the key points of public interest in Cala Mosca. If we are successful in this latest endeavour, the developer should be obliged to change the building plans and reduce construction on this environmentally sensitive and emblematic site.

Time is limited and unfortunately many of those who would normally help in collecting signatures for the Petition are away on holiday. Please make an effort and help us Save Cala Mosca from excessive and unnecessary construction.
