Torrevieja council have awarded a 3 year waterskiing franchise on the city waterfront to the company Cable Ski Torrevieja details of which are expected to be released within the next few days.

Cable Ski Torrevieja will operate a new nautical-sports centre that will offer experiences based around two activities, skiing and wakeboarding, but both at the end of a 175 mtr cable.

They will be located between the Marina Salinas breakwater and the barrage that protects the Torrevieja port.

The company says that the activity could be in place by as early as this weekend.

The company first requested permission to operate the activity, which they say will complement the existing nautical sports experience in the town, last April, at which time their submission was forwarded to the Capitanía Marítima in the Torrevieja Ayuntamiento.

The Department agreed to an initial concession of three years with the possibility of annual extensions up to a maximum of ten.

The facility will cover an area of approximately 5,000 m2 of water bordered by two towers which will be anchored on the sea bottom, both situated parallel to the Marina Salinas jetty. They will also provide a bar and a terrace.

Similar activities first emerged in the 90s since when they have been operating successfully in San Rafael (Madrid), Marbella and Benidorm, where they are said to complement the local tourism.

However there are some critics of the scheme who say that the introduction of such an activity will severely infringe upon local fishing, bathing and sailing facilities, and will hamper the operation of thousands of pleasure boats, anglers and bathers that operate in and around the port.
