OFFICIALS VISIT ORIHUELA BEACH

Part of Orihuela Costa´s beaches were closed off on Monday of last week, when a large crack formed in the Cliffside above the beach at Barranco Rubio.

As a twenty metre long and thirty metre deep piece of cliff face was considered unstable, the beach was closed off firstly to assess the damage, then to remove the problematic piece.

The local police provided a cordon around the area, with officers on duty constantly, as numerous bathers chose to ignore the signs blocking access, some walking along the closed beach, others simply moving into the sea to work, presumably believing the water provided a barrier from harm if the cliff were to collapse.

Delegate of the government of Valencia, Serafín Castellano, visited the area along with other regional representatives from Valencia, as well as provincial representative from Alicante, and the acting mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata, along with the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer. Former mayor of the municipality, Mónica Lorente, and former councillor for the coast under her government, José Aniorte, also visited the area, all accompanied by numerous members of the Local Police and Guardia Civil, both ground forces and senior officers.

Although the provincial coastal department of Alicante has a budget to cover such emergency repairs as this, according to Castellano, the Valencian government has spent some 355,000 euro this year alone, mostly making areas like this safe, transferring sand, debris removal and demolition, none of which were apparently effective in this case.

Meanwhile, Orihuela´s coastal councillor, Martina Scheurer, seized the opportunity to speak with the provincial representative responsible for the coastline, highlighting some of the outstanding issues in Orihuela. The result of those talks is that a meeting will now take place after the summer, to enable the next formal process to seek rectification of the structural problems to be resolved.

All the officials present praised the prompt response to the emergency, and the way the closure and cleanup operation was handled, keeping the inconvenience to beachgoers, at the busiest time of year, to a minimum.
