In the first half of 2014, crime figures in Orihuela have fell by 9.3%, above the average drop of both Alicante and Valencia.
The announcement was made by regional government delegate Serafín Castellano, during a visit to the Orihuela Costa. Castellano says that the figure is “very significant”, as now the official crime rate, which measures offences per thousand inhabitants, now stands at 42.2%. That figure ten years ago, in 2004, stood at 88%, whereas it was 47.7% in 2001.
Castellano detailed how violent crime is down by 16.4%, robbery with violence and intimidation has dropped by 26.1%, robberies fell by 10.6%, theft of motor vehicles has dropped by 7.3%, whilst drug use has fallen by 7.1%.
In a speech, Castellano said, “I think we are on the right track with the decline of criminal offences, it encourages further work on the same line but we must not lower our guard”.
Castellano then praised the work of the Guardia Civil, National and Local Police, and thanked them for their efforts.
There is currently no further information available on the abandoned construction of a new emergency centre on the Orihuela Costa, which would house the police, ambulance and fire services.
