REDISCOVERING ORIHUELA THROUGH ITS HISTORY

The capital of the Vega Baja region of the Alicante province, Orihuela is an ancient town with a long and distinguished history visitors to which are now able to rediscover the city’s history through some of its main characters, the likes of the poet Miguel Hernández, Archbishop Fernando de Loazes or the Armengola heroin, all played by a group of six young actors.

These theatre tours take place every couple of weeks. They start at the school Santo Domingo and for very nearly two hours an average of 80 visitors are transported back in time, witnessing iconic events through the eyes of the actors as they really happened, stories both familiar and otherwise in which the audience discovers the real history of Orihuela City.

The history of the college itself is explained by one of the city’s most famous sons, the Orihuela born Archbishop Fernando de Loazes, the founder of the original college who was subsequently to become the Archbishop of Valencia, all through the actions of an actor.

At the Gate de la Olma, the troubadour Mariano provides another overview of the city before the group moves on to the Museo Casa de Miguel Hernández, the house where the poet lived and which contains many of his contemporary personal effects and photographs, where the poet himself, played by actor from La Nena Crea, welcomes them and even accompanies the party to a festival that takes place in la calle de Arriba.

The music and poetry enliven the whole tour with the theme “Orihuela city of light” in which there is plenty of opportunity for emotional and comedic moments. Each character that visitors meet carries a lantern with which to guide them to their next destination.

The Armengola, heroine of Orihuela and one of the most important figures in Orihuela, perhaps most well known from the Fiestas de la Reconquista, the folklore festival of the Moors and Christians, brings the tour to a close as she takes visitors to the gates of the City, repeating many of the experiences that they have discovered earlier.

Described as perhaps the most original way to discover Orihuela, and organized by the Department of Tourism, dates of forthcoming tours are 13 and 27 September, 11 and 25 October.
