According to a press release from the Partido Popular of Orihuela, the municipality owes the fire consortium 64,000 euro.
For this reason, the fire service will only provide emergency cover in the municipality, only attending emergencies, and will not be present to cover events that would normally be of risk but preventable, such as firework displays. As the risk of fire can be prevented by not setting the fireworks off, the risk factor from this sort of event is easily avoided.
The first major event they are refusing to attend is the celebration of Orihuela´s own patron saint, the Virgen de Monserrate, to be held on the 31st of August.
The acting mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata, has declared that the outstanding payment will be made imminently, and that the receipt of a debtors letter is normal practice, whilst confirming that, “I wanted to make clear that the fiesta will not be left without the protection of fire fighters”, whilst criticising the PP for their “alarmist” attitude.
