As Spanish children begin the joyful preparation to return to school this week, an association representing parents in Valencia has calculated that the cost of going back to school this year is 716 euro per child on average, 6.3% more than the 673 euro bill last year.

The Tyrius association conducts the report annually, looking at the overall cost of schooling, including books, uniforms and school supplies for the start of classes. As an average cost, the price does of course differ depending on areas, as it does depending on the educational level of the child.

Secondary education is the most expensive, averaging out at 899 euro per child, whereas educating the youngest family members works out at an average of 421 euro, their report says. High school students will cost 848 euro on average, and primary pupils around 698 euro.

The report indicates that the average cost of uniforms is 287 euro for toddlers, 346 euro at Primary level and for Secondary school the cost is 416 euro.

The cost of textbooks works out at around 220 euro per child, although this cost can be significantly reduced if the books are second hand, and even better if a sibling can hand them down, but this cost is considerably less than those students who have to commit to attend the more technologically advanced centres, where the cost of acquiring a tablet computer works out at around 515 euro for the first year, including the necessary licences for the downloaded materials and books.

The association advise shopping around for products to get the best deals, visiting “book banks” for cheaper text books, and consulting with other parents and parental groups who may offer share and exchange options, thus reducing the considerable financial burden.
