Benidorm has once again come out tops as the fastest growing destination among British holidaymakers wanting to get away for their summer break.

This is reflected in a study by the Spain Tourist Board of all major booking portals. In figures released last week they say that the number of UK tourists heading for Benidorm during the month of August increased by 164% whilst there was a general decline in those bound for other destinations.

The figures were also echoed by the Benidorm City Council and in major UK tabloids such as the Daily Mail.

The report says that Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey remain as the main destinations for British holidaymakers although the tourist capital of the Costa Blanca continues to head the list as their most popular location.

And there are two other Spanish cities that figure on the list behind Benidorm. Also on the list of the top 20 favorite destinations for the English market are Valencia and Barcelona, ranking seventh and sixteenth positions respectively showing increases of 83% and 62%.

However, despite the upward trend shown in Benidorm during August the number of British tourists arriving on the Costa Blanca fell by 44%. The same pattern was recorded in many other areas of the country such as the Costa Dorada and Costa Brava, which lost 55% and 32% of visitors from the United Kingdom, when compared to data compiled for 2013.

Of those families that are taking holidays overseas, they are spending less when they hit the attractions and clubs. The tightening of the purse strings which has brought reductions in supermarket spending in UK appears to continue once families board their flights for a summer break.

Spending by UK residents while on overseas visits has dipped 16per cent in the first six months of 2014 compared with the same period last year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has announced.
