DROWNINGS INCREASED THIS YEAR

A total of 34 people have drowned in the waters of the Valencia region so far this summer, 9 more than last year, according to the provisional data released by the 112 emergency coordination centre.

Last year, 25 people drowned and another 21 were hospitalised with symptoms of drowning, in the period between the 1st of June and the 31st of August. This year, the figure is 34 deaths and 38 hospitalised. Of those treated by the emergency service, 55 were on the beach, some 78% of the total, and 16 were in swimming pools.

In the Alicante province, there have been 24 deaths and 21 people taken to hospital, considerably more than Valencia, where 6 people have died and 10 people hospitalised, and in Castellón where 4 people have been killed and 7 people taken to hospital.

The first incident of the season was on the 2nd of June on the beach at playa El Torreón in Benicàssim, Castellón, when a 17 year old was displaying symptoms of drowning and was taken to Castellón General Hospital, where he recovered.

Two days later, on the 4th of June, the first fatality of the season occurred when a man in his 60´s drowned on the playa del Cura beach of Torrevieja. The latest recorded death by drowning was in La Marina on Thursday, when a 68 year old resident of the Elche town lost his life.
