RED PALM WEEVIL CONTINUES TO RAVAGE SEGURA

They say that situation is in danger of becoming out of control in the Vega Baja and now in the city of Orihuela

Despite the removal of over 300 palm trees by La Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS), the PSOE have warned the Orihuela Council of the continued infestation in dozens more of the Red Palm Weevil (Rhyhchophorus Ferrugineus), particularly in trees situated in the mountains of Orihuela, Cabeza de Hurchillo, Callosa de Segura and Redován

They say that situation is in danger of becoming out of control in the Vega Baja and now in the city of Orihuela, and in the last two weeks, there is increasing alarm at the presence of the beetle also known as “Barrenillo de los pinos” that specifically attacks pine trees, where they can leave up to 5000 boreholes in a single tree, even in times of drought.

The PSOE say that they have made especial representation to the Orihuela Council asking that they make immediate and urgent contact to the CHS who they would ask to expedite their infected palm and pine tree removal works which they say must be eradicated before the end of the summer as it will become even more rampant in the Autumn.

Originally from tropical Asia, the red palm weevil has spread to Africa and Europe, reaching the Mediterranean in the 1980s.

It was first recorded in Spain in 1994 where it usually infests palms younger than twenty years.

The availability of effective insecticide treatments against the weevil is limited so destruction is largely thought to be the only successful eradication measure currently available.
