Councillor for the Coast and Beaches, Martina Scheurer, said last week that the municipality now has permission from the Coastal Authority to make repairs along the coastal footpaths where they have suffered mud and landslides particularly adjacent to the beach at Cala Capitan, close to Cabo Roig, where the path has been closed for over a year.

As the coastal paths fall under the jurisdiction of the Costas and not the Orihuela Council they have had to wait for the authority and the funding before they can set out on any works. But now, with a budget of 50,000 euros, Scheurer has said that she is able to authorise the start of repairs to the footpath at Cala Capitan that has long been a major inconvenience to residents and tourist who use the coastal path. She says that she now hopes that the repairs will be completed in time for the influx of visitors to the area in the next spring-summer campaign.

Despite repairs that are also needed elsewhere along the 10km of municipal coastline, this is the only investment that is currently available. But the good news is that the council is expecting a group of experts from northern Spain to make a visit so that a detailed repair plan and budget can be introduced.

Another area where urgent action is required is La Caleta, where there are more landslides. The councilor said that in this case many of the owners of the houses on the cliff tops will be required to install rainwater collection systems, so that the water doesn’t fall directly onto the rocks, as their contribution toward the costs of repairs

Two other stretches of coastline where work is needed are Aguamarina and Barranco Rubio where a hundred feet crack appeared along a stretch between Barranco Rubio and Mil Palmeras during the summer.
