Three patera boats arrived in Torrevieja on Thursday morning containing the latest wave of 20 illegal immigrants, five of which are said to be minors (this will be subject to the relevant medical tests for verification)

The chief operating officer of the Red Cross, Andrés Chessa, has revealed that the majority of people arrived in wet clothing and displayed signs of exhaustion, as a result of which one of the arrivals was rushed straight to hospital.

Sources from the Civil Guard said that one of the three boats was sighted at about 2:35am by the Immigration services and appeared stranded on the beach area offshore from Playa Flamenca, Punta Prima, close to Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja. Six occupants were picked up and arrested.

Later, at around 3:20 am, the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard intercepted two further boats with fourteen people on board about miles of the coast of Torrevieja, directly out from Cabo Roig.

All of the immigrants were said to be young men, of North African origin. According to sources from the Civil Guard, fourteen of them have claimed to be Algerian. Meanwhile, sources have said that some of the immigrants may also have come from Tunisia and Morocco.

Health organisation volunteers have provided care for the refugees in addition to providing warm clothes, food, drink and toiletries.

This is the sixth operation of its kind for the Red Cross in 2014 in the province of Alicante and the second during the month of September.

Since last August 77 immigrants have now landed on the shores of Alicante, including those reported to have arrived on Thursday morning.
