BIG BROTHER

Celebrity couple Shakira and Piqué are reported to be having a new brother for baby Milan, thought to be due in the early part of next year. The singer’s mother was caught by the press as she was leaving the home Shakira shares with Barça FC forward Gerard Piqué, 27, and proudly told them the news.

DESIGNERS ON SHOW

Spanish Designers took over the catwalk at the New York Fashion Week and showed that the country’s creations can hold their own among some of the world’s top household names. Custo Dalmau was a pioneer for Spain on the Big Apple’s fashion scene, presenting his exotic and provocative womenswear collection, Skin, which stopped on just the right side of decency.

SECURITY FORUM

The Minister for Defence, Pedro Morenés, took part in the 19th Spain-US Forum on Saturday together with the US Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, a delegation of Spanish and US parliamentarians led by Senator Tim Kaine, and representatives from businesses related to both the defence and other sectors.

TERRORISM PAYMENTS

Friday 19 September is the deadline for the submission of claims by victims of terrorism who are seeking payment of compensation from the Spanish Government. The process has been open for 12 months. Scales of payment are: 250,000 euros death, 500,000 euros for severe disability, EUR 180,000 for total incapacity, 100,000 euros for total disability

BELT UP

Figures released by the DGT last week say that 26% of those killed in traffic accidents involving passenger cars during the summer and 30% of the occupants of vans, were not using seat belts at the time of the accident, despite the issue of 127,900 fines to motorists during 2013. As such a spokesman said they will soon announce the details of a new campaign for monitoring the use of safety belts and child restraint systems.

ART WORKSHOP CANCELLED

The Municipal Institute of Culture at Joaquín Chapaprieta have announced that the fifth edition of the Ars Creatio Gala of Culture, which was scheduled on Friday September 19 at the Municipal Theatre, has been suspended for technical reasons. The cultural association will continue, however, with their usual activities, and preparation of their quarterly magazine.

TORREVIEJA TOURISM ON THE UP

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, disclosed last week that during the first eight months of this year (January to August) the Express Passenger Transport Service between Torrevieja and Alicante Airport has been used by a total of 57,687 passengers, an increase of 15% compared the same period of 2013, in which the total number of users was 48,147. This demonstrating the rise of tourism in the Torrevieja area.

TORREVIEJA UPyD ELECTIONS

The Torrevieja branch of UPyD held its membership elections last week for the composition of the Local Board. The current chairman, José Serna Lorente, topped the vote by 86% of all the votes cast. The party said that the election process took place without incident and “with total internal transparency ‘. After the ballot, José Serna vowed to fight “for genuine democratic regeneration throughout the region.”

ROJALES SURPLUS

The Rojales City Council has now approved its general account for the year 2013 where all groups were represented in the municipal vote (PSOE, PP and Pader). In the words of the Councillor for Finance, José Pedro Chazarra, financial situation in the municipality is ‘very good’ showing a surplus of 1.5 million euros.

STREET TRADERS

Orihuela Council are organizing a course for street vendors. According to the Councillor of Commerce, Manuel Gallud, the course will consist of five three-hour sessions aimed at “enhancing their skills and their business knowledge.” They will be held on 15, 17, 19, 23 and 25 September from 18:00 to 21:00. All of the talks will take place in the premises of the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce.

NONE INCLUSIVE

The workers at the four star Hotel Acazaba Mar in Almería are striking after not being paid for several months. Customers arriving at the hotel, many of whom had paid for an all inclusive holiday, have found no waiters, no chefs with the tables having not been cleared and still holding the remains of the previous day’s meal. One of the strikers said, since June they have been playing with us, they promise to pay tomorrow but it still hasn’t happened.

PLACID DECEMBER

The Internationally acclaimed three-tenors Spanish singer, Plácido Domingo, will perform at the Grand Theatre in Elche in December. He will appear together with the Palau de les Arts Orchestra. The cultural event starts in October and carries on until January 2015, and was announced to the press by Pablo Ruz, the coordinator of culture from Elche Town Hall,

BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT

King Felipe VI was in Malaga last week together with Queen Letizia. The pair were on their first official visit since he was named King. Whilst in the city the King and Queen paid a visit to the Picasso Museum before attending an inaugural dinner at the Automobile Museum where they opened the 19th Spain-US forum.

KEEPING DRY

According to new rainfall data collected by the University of Alicante Climatology Laboratory the city of Alicante is the driest populated area in the world. The province has experienced serious drought conditions and in the last 12 months, has only seen 104.4 litres of rainfall per-square-metre – just 30% of the normal rate.
