VALENCIA GOVERNMENT TO SUBSIDISE GUARDAMAR CASTILLO

Members of la recuperada brigada guardamarenca

As a result of the increase in vandalism suffered by Guardamar’s ancient Castillo the Valencian regional Government has agreed to fund the cost of installing perimeter lighting at this important archaeological site which has been declared a monument of cultural interest and dates back to between the 9th and 10th centuries.

The cost of the work will be 60,000 euros and it will provide yet another step in the revival of this important part of the town’s heritage.

However as a preliminary step, the town’s Brigadas de Emergencia (Emergency Brigade) has already begun the cleanup and clearing campaign in and around the site.

The intention of the government guardamarenco team is to make a roadmap for future actions that will culminate in the launch of the new Information Centre for La Rabita and Fonteta.

“Guardamar Castle is a symbol that requires continuous attention and maintenance, and for that reason we have the cooperation of many different groups and associations,” said the Councillor for Heritage, Jesus Huertas. “The installation of the perimeter lights will act as a deterrent to vandals and make it so much easier for these groups such as the Emergency Brigade to monitor the castle’s security.”
