A small boat with eight immigrants on board, four of them children, was seized on Monday in waters to the south of Alicante. According to Red Cross sources it was towed into the port of Torrevieja by the Civil Guard maritime service.

The eight are said to have come from Libya, Algeria and Tunisia.

It would appear that the immigrants were adrift for three days so rather all were in a reasonable state of health apart from two suffering from low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and three from skin rashes.

The vessel was first sighted around 11.30 hours about 55 miles southeast of Alicante and on arrival in Torrevieja it was met by seven members of the Red Cross, including a number of translator.

After initial health checks the group were provided with food and dry clothes.

Since last August a total of 85 boat people have arrived in the region, including the 8 who arrived today.
