PREPARING FOR RAIN

In anticipation of the expected annual rainy season, work and preparation has begun around the Torrevieja and Orihuela coastline, to try to alleviate the potential risk of flooding after one of the hottest summers in decades threatens the worst floods in years.

In Orihuela, a planning meeting was held that included representatives from the Cruz Roja, Provincial Fire Consortium, Local Police, water supply company Hidraqua, management of the Torrevieja and Orihuela hospitals, municipal engineers and technicians and the acting mayor, Antonio Zapata.

One of the biggest concerns is now in some of the dry river beds, which had become inundated with an accumulation of rubbish for many years, but are now mostly clear, which will result in the potentially fastest flowing water evacuation for some time.

The town hall of Orihuela has also asked the Ministry of Development to provide water pumps in key locations, to ease the flow of water and offer better control of the evacuation.

In Torrevieja, where heavy rains seem to create chaos in Torrevieja on an annual basis, the water Company Agamed have begun work on once again digging a series of storm channels along the side of the Torrevieja-Crevillente CV-905 road.

The work will take in the stretch of road adjacent to la Urbanización Torreta III, the entrance to the Parque Natural next to vía verde and la calle Golondrina, to the junction of the N-332 at la Urbanización Doña Inés.

Much like the same statements made every year before the September rains, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, said that the works will cover a total area of 35,000 square metres, all of which will be treated with herbicides in order to delay the onset of plant growth and enable water to flow more freely. This work is expected to be completed within 2 weeks.

Meanwhile, the management of emergencies in Orihuela have planned to organise an emergency drill on the 25th of September, to ensure that their emergency plans are in place and that everybody is prepared to deal, as best they can, with one of the wettest periods in the seasonal calendar.
