The Finals of the SABA Summer Knockout Competition, incorporating the playoff of the Men’s Four Wood Pairs Leagues, were held at San Luis Bowls Club from Friday 12th to Monday 15th September.

Over 180 games were played in the Knockout competition prior to the Semi Finals covering 6 different disciplines over a 3 month period.

Friday Morning saw the playoff of the Men’s Four Wood Pairs between Fred Willshire’s team from Vistabella and Nigel Baigent’s team from Quesada.

The end result was a win for Fred’s team by 4 points to 2. Fred and Ian Kenyon beat Rob Pinfold and Colin Highland and Andy Leggatt and Arthur Brown won against David Johnson and Nigel Baigent, Quesada picked up their win courtesy of George Carnell and Dave Donovan in a close game with Martin Foulcer and Richard Lee so for the second year running Vistabella went away with the title.

Joining them for the presentation were Lynn Greenlands Ladies team from Greenlands who won the ladies league. The Semi Finals of the Men’s Singles and one of the Ladies Singles Semis were also taking place on Friday Morning. There was a strong Quesada presence in these games where Pete Bonsor proved too strong for San Luis Derek Cooper while Bill Pain overcame San Miguel’s Drew Gerrard in the other semi. The Ladies Semi was an all Quesada Affair with Peta Rhodes proving just too strong for Lisa Bonsor. In the afternoon we saw the Semis of the Men’s and Ladies Pairs, Peta and Lisa teamed up for this one to beat La Marina’s Janet Parsons and Kathy Manning while Lynn Greenland and Lin Miller overcame Vistabella’s Sandra Burrows and Jenny Bowman.

The Men’s Pairs saw victories for Pete Bonsor and Bill Pain over Greenlands Brian Miller and Barry Collins and San Luis’ Colin Jackson and Colin Lindgren over Vistabella’s Tony French and Mike Regan.

Saturday morning was taken up with the Semi Finals of the Mixed Pairs and the remaining Ladies Singles Semi. This was a tussle between Gail Willshire from Vistabella and Sandra Jones from Mazarron which although Sandra led for much of the way Gail eventually came out on top. In the Mixed Pairs Pete and Lisa Bonsor proved just too strong for Vistabella’s Mo and Martin Foulcer, while San Luis Shirley and John Withers had a real cliff hanger against Quesada’s Deidre Leeming and Jason Prokopowycz going to an extra end to take their place in the Final.

The Mixed Trips completed the Semi’s in the afternoon with two very competitive games Greenlands Lin and Brian Miller and Barry Collins defeated San Miguel’s Noel Davis, Ros Stockell and Drew Gerrard while in the other match Monte Mar’s Sue Kemp (standing in as substitute for Geraldine Fisher), Harry Dobson and Gordon Fisher beat Pete and Lisa Bonsor and Bill Pain winning the last six ends.

On Sunday we started the Finals with the Men’s Pairs and Ladies Pairs and what fantastic games they were, both going to the last end before we knew who had taken the title. In the Ladies Pairs Lin Miller and Lynn Greenland were up against Peta Rhodes and Lisa Bonsor and found themselves 12 – 4 down after 10 ends but slowly fought back to level the game at 13 all after 15 ends but still went into the last end 1 shot down Lynn Greenland saved the day with her last two woods to pick up 2 and take the title 16 – 15.

The Men’s Pairs followed a similar pattern but with just a slightly different outcome Colin Jackson and Colin Lindgren were 13 – 7 up after 14 ends against Bill Pain and Pete Bonsor only to be pegged back to 13 all after 17 ends and Bill and Pete were holding but with his second wood Colin Lindgren put the jack in the ditch with his toucher close by to take the game and the title 14 – 13. That finished the action for the day with the spectators nerves shattered.

Monday Morning gave us the finals of the Mixed Pairs and the Mixed Trips. In the Mixed Pairs, Pete and Lisa Bonsor took on Shirley and John Withers and won by 18 shots to 11 but the drama of the previous days finals was continued in the Mixed Trips, Harry Dobson and Gordon Fisher were now joined by Geraldine Fisher, who had played in all the earlier rounds, to take on Brian and Lin Miller and Barry Collins, the game was tight most of the way but Gordon and co. took a 16 – 10 lead after 13 ends only to be brought back to a one shot lead going into the last end and then dropping another 1 to force an extra end. Lin’s team looked as though they might take it but Gordon stole it with his last wood 18 – 17 phew.

The afternoon brought us the finals of the Blue Ribbon events the Men’s and Ladies Finals. In the Ladies Final Peta Rhodes was determined to retain the title she won last year and put on a faultless display which Gail Willshire was unable to do anything about giving the title to Peta for the second year running but her third time of winning.

The Men’s game also saw last year’s champion attempting to defend his title but on this occasion in the clash between Quesada’s Bill Pain and Pete Bonsor, Bill Pain put in a very solid performance to prevent Pete repeating last year’s win.

Trophies on Monday were presented by Vickie Riley Indigo Car Hires representative in Spain who have sponsored SABA over the last few years and can be contacted for some very competitive car hire rates in the UK on 0044 113 289 9281 (don’t forget to mention SABA), while thanks go to CBBA President John Albutt who presented the Men’s and Ladies Pairs trophies.

Competition organisers Arthur & Barbara Brown would like to thank San Luis Bowls Club for the Use of their Facilities, Kath & Frank Reid for a very successful raffle, our markers, Joy and Brian Gardiner, Pam Lockett and Nigel Baigent plus our Umpires Ros Stockell and Bob Donnelly and last but not least everyone who took part from start to finish making the SABA Summer Knockout’s such a successful competition.
