The Valencian Community Bowls Championship got underway on Friday evening with the Opening ceremony, held at the Emerald Isle Bowls Club, in front of bowlers from the competing clubs, spectators and guests.

Almost 300 bowlers from the 20 or so Costa Blanca clubs will contest the 7 disciplines made up of Ladies and Gents singles and doubles as well as mixed pairs, trips and fours.

Competition will take place over the next two weeks at The Emerald Isle, Greenlands and Vistabella Bowls Clubs with the semi finals and finals due to be held at Vistabella on Friday and Saturday 3rd and 4th October.

The Opening Ceremony was carried out in bright sunshine at The Emerald Isle where the competitors paraded onto the brand new green behind their club standards. Watching the event were guests, Cllr Martina Scheurer, Orihuela Sports representative, Jose Antonio Murcia, FEB Delegate Bob Donnelly and both the President and the manager of the Emerald Isle Bowls Club, Graham Roberts and Paul Moran.

Bob Roberts handed over the green to the Championship Committee after which we had the usual round of welcoming speeches, followed by the Spanish National Anthem. The gathering then retired to enjoy a buffet and drinks.

This is the first time in 2 or 3 years that many of the disciplines will be contested with only the mixed triples and the mixed fours being defended from 2013. The triples champions from Finca Guila, Charlie Speedie, Tony James and Pat Vaughan will meet the Greenlands trip of Mike and Florence Edwards and Graham Bater next Saturday at Vistabella while defending champions from the mixed fours, husband and wife pairings from San Miguel, the Colliers and the Perrings, will hope to get their title defence off to a successful start at the Emerald Isle in eight days time against Greenlands Steve Cantley, Brian Pocock, Mike Veale and Jan Pocock.

But it was the Men’s and Ladies Singles that got the tournament underway on Saturday and Sunday at all 3 venues. Colin Lindgren, San Luis, and Maggie Furness were the victors when last contested in 2011. Colin met John Raby of San Miguel while Maggie decided not to defend her title.

Led by Valencian Delegate Bob Donnelly the small committee of Fred Trigwell, Pam Lockett and June Jones have done a wonderful job in pulling the tournament together and the trio fully deserve the congratulations meted out on them in the Tournament Handbook by the FEB President, Don Oscar Gomez Morante.

You can go along and watch the games, entry to which is absolutely free, with the action taking place every morning for the next ten days from 10am, at The Emerald Isle, Greenlands and Vistabella Bowls Clubs.
