Having initially launched the campaign last year, revisiting it in April of this year, the Torrevieja PSOE opposition councillor Dora Fernández now says that more than 2,000 residents of Torrevieja support the calls for a beach for dogs in the city.

Within the first two months of the campaign, the socialist group collected 1,364 signatures, which were then presented and registered at the PROP archive and records office in the city.

Continuing with the collection of signatures, a couple of months later the figure reached 2,050 signatures, which were also presented at the PROP office, whilst the Psoe group filed a request with the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, that the government team discuss the matter in the May plenary meeting.

However, the councillor states that “Surprisingly, despite citizen mobilization, there has been no response from the Department of Health or by the Mayor”. According to the socialist, “Torrevieja, being a tourist town, which lives exclusively in this sector, the PP government team should consider that more and more people choose to travel with their pets, choosing those cities that offer more amenities and wellness for their animals”.

“There are numerous, and growing, coastal municipalities that have decided to narrow a stretch of beach for enjoyment and bathing of pets, offering an innovative and friendly image with animals, this being an attraction for both domestic tourists and abroad”, Fernández continues, “since there are hotels in Torrevieja that allow pets, some with their own enclosures, the PP must realise the obvious requests from its neighbours and are demonstrating a new mistake in tourism”.

Fernández says that “giving no answer essentially reveals two things: the lack of tourist vision and lack of sensitivity of the Partido Popular of Torrevieja towards animals. The Psoe of Torrevieja, confident that the petition of more than 2,000 citizens will bring benefits to the city, promises that after the elections in May, “When the Psoe rule Torrevieja in 2015, we will enable a stretch of beach for dogs in the city”.
