The corresponding fixture last season saw veteran midfielder Carrasco score a hat trick in a 4-3 victory for the visitors and on Sunday, at the magnificent ‘Sports City’, CD Torrevieja were undoubtedly hoping for more of the same.

But neither club has got its campaign off to a particularly auspicious start with the young Villarreal side sitting in the relegation places with 4 pts and just one win from their opening 4 games, and as for the visitors, who went into the season with high hopes of promotion, a narrow win in the opening game against Saguntino has been their only success in their opening 5 matches.

Much of this, of course, is due to the fact that, on too many occasions, they have been unable to keep all eleven players on the pitch so for Galiano, the challenges, Im afraid, still go far beyond entertaining football alone.

But in the opening 45 all the entertaining was done by Villarreal with Torry rarely getting themselves into the game, so much so that the home side could quite easily have been ‘out of sight’ by the half time whistle.

Villarreal deservedly opened the scoring on the half hour mark when Torry failed to clear a corner. The ball fell kindly to Christian who shot low and hard from a tight angle. They should have extended their lead moments later after Alexis had handled in the box but an excellent save from Oscar diving low to his left denied Ferreres from the spot.

On 40 minutes we saw 2 Villarreal misses in quick succession, both from Albert. After beating the offside his long range effort was touched onto the bar by Oscar. The ball rebounded into play as Albert moved wide. As Oscar narrowed the angle his second attempt was struck agonizingly wide.

Leaving the field at half time, as Galiano applauded Villarreal’s ‘total football’ he must surely have thought that the game was beyond Torrevieja but a half time shake up which saw Cristian and Steve replace Mati and Cesar, turned the game on its head.

The visitors immediately took the game to their hosts with Steve tormenting the Villarreal defence down the right flank. As he brought the ball into the area on 8 minutes he was inexplicable punched by Ferreres, brought to the attention of referee, Rafael Bueno Miralles, by an eagle eyed linesman. Ferreres got a red card, Torry a penalty and Rafa Gomez sent the keeper the wrong way to level the scores.

With numerical superiority Torry were now attacking the Villareal goal at will with chances falling to Steve, Carrasco, Borja and Vicente but non did enough to beat Quique between the sticks and then, after their precision football had come to nought, the final munte saw Oscar try a ‘route one’ upfield punt. Carrasco gathered with a exquisite touch, squared the ball to Rafa who steered it calmly into the back of the net to secure, what at half time appeared to be a most unlikely win.

The ball was returned to centrefield and Snr Mirrales blew the final whistle.

What a game, and what a final result. We were still getting our breath back as we drove back down the AP7.

More of the same next week, we hope, in the local derby against rivals Orihuela at the Vicente Garcia. Sunday evening ko at 6pm. Come along and support your local team, CD Torrevieja.

Torry lineup: Oscar, Vicente, Martin, Alexis, Jorge, Borja, Matías, Borja, Brani, Carrasco, Rafa Gómez y César. Subs: Marcos, Jordi, Steve, Ruben and Cristian
