Torrevieja’s Councillor for Beaches, Francisco Moreno, and Bibiano Vera, the President of the Local Red Cross, took time out on Monday to congratulate all those who have been working during the summer months, in whatever capacity, to monitor the public and provide lifesaving services to Torrevieja’s beaches.

Moreno said that once again, their contribution has been first class as a result of which the summer has passed with only a limited number of incidents, despite the large number of occurrences they have had to deal with.

Data published by the Local Red Cross in respect of assistance provided: General assistance, 3,874; Assists in sea rescues, 230; Social assistance, 2,037; support interventions, 73. Fortunately, throughout the summer there has not been a single drowning on any of the Torrevieja beaches.

Moreno said that the figures compare well with those published in 2013

Although there were some slight increases; General assists 2.20%; Sea rescues 6.98%; 2.26% Social assistance; support interventions 1.00%.

The Councillor said that items falling into the category of general assistance are those minor tasks such as sunburn relief, wounds, bites, jellyfish stings, minor bruises, allergies, etc., and almost all were resolved at the time. Assistance provided in the sea is that which was necessary to assist swimmers in difficulty while support interventions were those requiring ambulance assistance and transfer to a medical facility.

Moreno also noted from the data provided by the Red Cross, that a total of 1,166 wristbands were distributed to children on the beaches of Torrevieja during the summer. Assistance was provided to 152 children that had gone astray. Of the 152 children only four were wearing a wristband, demonstrating that the wristbands are a very effective way for parents to ensure their children don’t get lost.

The Councillor said that the performance of the lifeguards has been very good, which has been reflected in the results gathered from surveys amongst the public. He said that about 45% of users thought that the guards provided a GOOD service, and 39% rated it as VERY GOOD.

Finally, Moreno has stated that Torrevieja is considering extending the lifeguard service on the beaches during the summer 2015, and next year it could well begin before July.
