STOP KILLING OUR CATS

Last weeks demo outside the town hall

Over three hundred people demonstrated outside the Guardamar town hall last week to demand that the authorities stop the extermination of stray cats in the town in favour of their neutering. The practice, they say, is carried out regularly as a measure of keeping down their population.

Residents say that the company responsible for the collection of cats, Cereco ‘kill the animals, rather than relocate them or take them to a protective pet shelter ” said Andrés Navarro, one of the event organizers, and that “this still goes on even after months of discussions with the City Council.”

“Far from finding a solution the authorities continue to lie,” he continued. “We met all through July and August and, contrary to what was promised, late last month the council renewed their agreement with Cereco without studying the alternatives that we put forward to control the population of the cats, such as castration, or their resettlement to other parts of the city, to the suburbs, the seaport or unpopulated areas such as the cemetery.”

As if that were not enough, residents complain that the City Council continues to issue fines of up to 200 euros to people who feed the cats, which shows the complete disregard they have for animals, which is also reflected in their refusal to introduce a dog beach, which was requested by many residents last summer.
