ACTING ROYALTY RETURNING TO TV

Before we start with this week´s future overview, I need to clear up a little mistake in last week´s. I know quite a lot of you noticed the mistake, given the emails and messages received, but we were of course talking about Endeavour returning, not Lewis, which focuses on the early life of Chief Inspector Morse.

As for this week, we´re jumping over to America first of all, with the news that Desperate Housewives follow-up, Devious Maids, has been recommissioned for a third series. Not that will be too much of a surprise for fans who saw the season 2 finale, with a drive –by shooting at a wedding. No more spoilers though, just the news that it will return soon.

Our attention will also be turning to the Christmas schedules before long too, as is the case already with Channel 4, as filming began this week on a Charlie Brooker penned Christmas special. Perhaps not know for his stories focusing on the jollier side of life, it may well turn into a dark and sinister tale then the “heart-warming comedy-drama for all the family” sees a young brother and sister help Santa when his satnav goes wrong and he crash-lands near Beaconsfield on Christmas Eve. Just to prove it won´t be all mince pies and carrots, the show is described as a “deeply disturbing dystopian techno-nightmare that will unsettle and chill viewers to their core”.

Whilst we´re on the subject of Christmas, and before you start moaning, we know it´s only October, ITV´s Text Santa is already making plans for a return, with Alesha Dixon joining the presenter line-up. The singer and Britain’s Got Talent judge partners Paddy McGuinness for one hour of the charity appeal extravaganza on Friday the 19th of December. Other crackers on offer are the likes of George Clooney in a specially-written scene of Downton Abbey, and the stars of Coronation Street perform as we’ve never seen them before.

Taking our attention back from Christmas now though, Martin Clunes is to play the celebrated novelist and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a three-part adaptation of Julian Barnes’ novel, Arthur & George for ITV, which is based on an intriguing series of true events in the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who famously created the detective Sherlock Holmes. Filming also began this week in London and Staffordshire.

Filming has also begun this week on a new Itv drama starring two of the UK’s most renowned actors, David Threlfall and John Simm. Code of a Killer is based on the extraordinary true story of Alec Jeffreys’ discovery of DNA fingerprinting and its first use by Detective Chief Superintendent David Baker in catching a double murderer.

The BBC has also announced a ting royalty joining the cast of The Go-Between, airing on BBC One next year as part of its season of classic 20th century literature. Jim Broadbent is playing the older Leo while Vanessa Redgrave has taken on the role of the older Marian. Both actors have a strong connection to The Go-Between. Redgrave’s father, Michael, played the Older Leo in the first adaptation in 1971. Broadbent meanwhile appeared as an extra in the same adaptation in his first ever, albeit uncredited, film role. Broadbent says: “Having been an extra in the first adaptation of The Go-Between in 1971 I was thrilled to be asked to be in this new version. It is a tremendous novel and Adrian Hodges’ script captures it perfectly“.

Finally, history fans have something of a modern twist show to look forward to as historian Bettany Hughes and aerial archaeologist Ben Robinson look down on sites of great historical interest to gain a brand new perspective and uncover further information about our ancestors. Nothing new there perhaps, but this time they are using an octocopter, a remote controlled helicopter carrying a camera. Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, Stonehenge, Maiden Castle, Sutton Hoo, The Antonine Wall and Old Sarum in Wiltshire will all get the drone flyby treatment, revealing a new insight into our nation’s story and showing Britain’s stunning landscapes through fantastic aerial views.
