The award given by the Spanish government in recognition of policing has not only sparked controversy this year, but a court case to try to reverse the decision.
The Gold Medal of Police Merit has been awarded by the Interior Ministry to a religious statue of the Most Holy Mary of Love, “for sharing police values such as dedication, caring, solidarity and sacrifice.”
This is not the first time an award has been given to an inanimate, though iconic object, as it has become something of a tradition. However, this year, supporters of a secular state are taking action to not only claim back the award, but to prevent it from being attached to a religious figure in the future.
A court case has been filed with the spokesperson for a national group, Jorge García González, calling for limits to how the catholic religion is represented in Spain, with an online petition already underway to ensure that the award is given to somebody who not only serves the population by policing the country, but also somebody who actually exists.
