The Maritime Police have now been patrolling the Torrevieja area for the sixteen consecutive years.

Along with the Councillor for the Police, Agustina Esteve, The Maritime Service Unit of the local police appeared in the Council Offices last week to make public the figures of their summer activities.

Agents Adolfo Rodriguez, Antonio Alarcon and Jerome Manzanaro said that they had been tasked on 761 occasions during the summer, which included rescuing 18 people who had been put in difficulty following faults encountered by their boats.

They had also been called in to monitor and prevent illegal fishing as well as to stop 93 speeding boats in the port, 20 vessels for entry to unauthorized areas and the inspection and identification of 91 boats which were moored in the harbor without permission.

They arrested 61 personnel who were harpoon fishing unlawfully and reprimanded a further 121 sport fishermen who were fishing without the appropriate license. They also attended 192 swimmers who had strayed into the yacht and shipping areas.

The police vessel was used to assist with the control of seven religious and cultural events and four sporting events, the highlight of which was the maritime procession on the feast of the Virgen del Carmen.

Environmentally the team reported 69 occasions of possible dumping at sea along different points of the coastline and a total of 25 reports were made of jellyfish drifting toward a number of different Torrevieja beaches.

The Maritime Police have now been patrolling the Torrevieja area for the sixteen consecutive years.
