POLICE PROTEST OUTSIDE COURTHOUSE

Police protest in solidarity with their colleagues outside the Torrevieja courthouse

About fifty local police, together with support and cleaning staff, protested outside the gates of the Torrevieja Courthouse on Monday morning during the trial of six local officers and three janitors who appeared as defendants, charged for offences which included showing their naked torso’s during earlier protests which took place outside the Town Hall earlier in the year.

However the hearing had to be postponed because of technical difficulties encountered by prosecution councilors with a video machine.

The hearing was attended by Police Inspector Manuel Lopez, José Manuel Dolon, Municipal spokesman for Los Verdes and Alejandro Esteban, Secretary of the Alternativa Popular.

Applause broke out at the door of the courthouse from some members of the trade unions CCOO and Sipol when the adjournment was announced. .

Representing the CCOO, local police officer Juan Antonio Moya, said the rally was held in support of his colleagues and that the whole thing was “nothing more than a witch hunt and persecution and that the officers were doing nothing more than “standing up for their rights.”

Moya said that there had been no willingness to negotiate by City officials, which is all that his members ask for. They were asking for nothing that was illegal. One example of their claims was a seven day rest period following seven continuous days of duty, which is a shift pattern already being satisfactorily operated by the coastguard service

He said that until their claims were acknowledged his members would resume their monthly protests to coincide with the conclusion of the council plenary sessions, starting this month.
