Tog Ratings! As the weather begins to cool over the next few weeks … here is some useful information regarding duvets!

Which tog rating for which season ?

Tog ratings tell you how warm a duvet (also known as a continental quilt or just quilt) will be and the higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet will be.

Please don’t underestimate the importance of the right bedding for the time of year. The correct weight duvet will keep you at just the right temperature so you’ll enjoy deep, restorative sleep every night.

If you are too hot or too cold in bed then your sleep will be disturbed and you won’t wake up ready to face the day. Duvets come in a wide range of tog ratings so you can choose one to suit your sleep and comfort needs.

Tog ratings are based on the duvet’s ability to trap warm air or thermal insulation ability. Natural duvets have better thermal properties than hollowfibre or synthetic duvets and therefore need less filling to be able to achieve the same level of warmth. Children may suit a 10.5 to duvet. This best way to help your child be comfortable and regulate their temperature, is to choose a lower tog duvet for them and then leave a blanket or throw folded across the bottom of the bed. This way they can easily pull it up for extra warmth when they feel they need it.

Lightweight Summer duvet 4.5 tog

Warm Spring/Autumn duvet 9 – 10.5 tog

Toasty Winter duvet 13.5 – 15 tog

An All Seasons duvet offers great flexibility. They consist of two separate duvets – a lightweight 4.5 tog for summer and a warmer 9 tog for spring and autumn. During winter, you simply put the two duvets together for a toasty 13.5 tog duvet.

Which duvet filling is right for you and your family?

Anti – Allergy/ Hollowfibre Duvets – Allergies are becoming more frequent and can have an adverse effect on health. It has been established that 25% of all allergies and 50% of all asthmatic conditions are directly attributable to allergens of the house dustmite, which are particularly found in beds and bedding.

If you or someone within the family suffers from allergies, it is important to choose a duvet with a non-allergenic hollowfibre filling. Natural feather and down duvets contain natural dust allergens and so should be avoided by allergy sufferers. Hollowfibre duvets can also be easily washed at 60°C, which kills dust mites. Some Anti-Allergy duvet fillings are also treated with antimicrobial and antibacterial protection to minimise allergic reactions to dust mites.

This safe and durable anti-allergy protection is permanently fixed to our fibres and gives long lasting protection, even after frequent washing. Hollowfibre duvets are more practical and are a great choice if you know that you will need to wash you duvet regularly.

They can be washed in a large capacity machine at up to 60 C.

Natural Fillings – Duvets with natural fillings are soft, comfortable and highly resistant and they can last longer than those with synthetic fillings. Feather and down duvets vary in quality depending on the type of bird that the filling comes from.

Down clusters from geese are the most luxurious because they are bigger and they trap air and create a light, warm and comfortable duvet.

Duck feather and down duvets are heavier than goose down and these options are hard wearing. Natural filled duvets should be professionally laundered, because they need to be thoroughly dried and this can be difficult to achieve at home.
