Last Thursday evening saw a sell out audience pack into the Union Musica in San Miguel to take part in JB Brass Bands first ‘Last night of the Proms’ style concert.

With all tickets sold, the organisers did their best to accommodate supporters who had turned up on the night by bringing down chairs from the Bands rehearsal room.

On one of the hottest nights in October, the sell out crowd were entertained, in the first half, with a trip around the UK with visits to Wales, Ireland, Cornwall and the North East. Soloists, Debbie on Soprano Cornet and Jayne on Euphonium excelled in the heat as did the outstanding Cornet trio of Trudy, Ian G and Debbie again.

The second half brought the audience into the mix, with the traditional ‘last night’ music of Sir Henry Wood and Sir Edward Elgar. The audience lead the tempo in The Sailors Hornpipe with the band keeping up the pace and then responding to shouts for an encore.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house, or I’ve heard on the stage, after an emotive performance of Nimrod. The bands resident compare, comedian and cornet player Ian Gibson entertained the audience with anecdotes as well as giving the band a well earned breather between pieces.

Also present were representatives from the Costa Lions who raised 230 euros from a raffle and sales of Union Jack flags. Said flags earned more than their keep in the final piece, Land of Hope and Glory, with the audience on their feet for the final verse.

Unfortunately, due to complications at the Ayuntamiento in Rojales, a planned second concert will not take place. However, with the resounding success of this concert I predict that this will be a regular annual occasion.
