As the Volvo Ocean Race was in full swing, businesses in and around Alicante were calculating their balance sheets to ascertain the financial value of such an auspicious event.

With hotels at 80% occupancy on weekdays, increasing to 90% at the weekend, a figure much higher than a normal October, hotels certainly saw the benefits.

As for the other businesses, the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration has calculated that the economic impact of the tourist influx has been valued at 75 million euro, as, on average, each visitor was spending 300 euro per day.

The event has also secured employment for more than 1,300 people during the event, mostly in the service and catering sector, as well as event organisation.

For the City of Alicante itself, there has also been a benefit in the socio terms, with activities developed for some 2,800 children, in conjunction with the local schools, aimed at promoting cultural, educational, sports and musical activities in the sports village area.

Finally, the event has had a significant impact on the brand image of Alicante, with more than 22,000 people following the event, broadcasting on 94 television channels and numerous radio stations around the world, with around 700 accredited journalists reporting on the event, collectively raising the image of the provincial capital and key city of the Costa Blanca to a new audience for future tourism.
