TORREVIEJA GREENS TAKE UP CROSSING FIGHT

The Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja has taken on board the long standing campaign to have a pedestrian crossing built at Los Balcones, on the CV-95 main road from the coast that heads to the motorway network.

As one of the three main arterial routes serving Torrevieja, residents say that they have been demanding a zebra crossing built in the location nearest to the local commercial centre, but, according to the Los Verdes, the governing PP has “never been interested in its execution”.

With a bus stop, pharmacy, commercial and catering units on one side of the road, the site is considered a danger by the residents living on the side which is not serviced by the outlet, who face a 60 metre walk along the road to the nearest crossing, just on the other side of the roundabout that serves to site, then another 60 metres back to the retail units.

A zebra crossing is provided over the slip roads on either side of the main carriageway where the retail units are located, Avenida de Orihuela and Avenida de San Miguel, but once pedestrians reach the main carriageway, it does not continue.

According to statements by those responsible for Territorial Highway Service in Alicante of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment, the execution of works for the installation of pedestrian crossing would be resolved by submitting the application, signed by the Mayor of Torrevieja, accompanied by the corresponding technical report, none of which have been done.

In a statement, the Los Verdes say that they will continue to demand before the City Council and the Department of Infrastructure that this vital element of road safety is provided for the residents of the urbanization of Los Balcones, requiring promptness in taking action to prevent any accidents that may occur.
