Orihuela´s animal protection centre, which is run by the ASOKA organisation, is celebrating its second year with more volunteers, more help, and more animals looking for homes.
The centre currently has some 200 dogs, 60 cats, 5 pigs, 2 goats and a pony waiting to be adopted, as the aim of the centre is to find adoptive homes for the animals, rather than destroy them. Asoka is currently collaborating with animal associations in other countries such as Germany, Holland, Belgium, Finland and the UK to that aim.
An “open house” event was held this week in order to highlight the work carried out by staff and volunteers, in addition to raising awareness of the seriousness of the social problem of neglect and animal abuse.
During the event, a raffle and various activities were held, including a prize for the most obedient, the most handsome and a barking catwalk and competition for the biggest ears.
Photographs from the event are on their Facebook page, Asoka Orihuela- Página.
