On Saturday the 18th October The Torrevieja Pipes & Drums were joined by Roy, Trevor and Jim from The Wessex Pipe Band and Bill from the Nottingham Police Pipe Band to play in the Gardens of Malecon at Murcia. The 4 men had flown over from England especially for the engagement. The event was spectacular and was organized by The Codex Belix Association, a group of enthusiasts who recreate historical events through re enactments of major battles.

Saturday this year, it was the WW2 Operation Plunder, crossing the Rhine in 1944. They are sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and are regular visitors to the City of Murcia. Main campsites and display areas are set up in the gardens along with activities and static war vehicles.

Before the battle commenced there was a short remembrance service at the arch in the centre of the garden along with the laying of a poppy wreath.

It was followed by a Veterans parade down the main road to the bridge where the mock battle took place. The parade included two Chelsea Pensioners and was led by the magnificent sound of bagpipes and drums provided by the Torrevieja Pipes & Drums.

Tanks and Jeeps drove down the road carrying the soldiers who, along with authentic sound effects fought a well rehearsed battle. Even the Red Cross Nurses ran onto the Battle Field to take away injured soldiers. This event is staged each October in Murcia over a period of 3 days. It is well worth a visit so I suggest that next October you check the Murcia web site and think about going to see it yourself.
