Santa Pola CF 2 – 1 UD Horadada

Three first half goals, the opening couple to the home side, settled an entertaining match at the Manolo Macia, earning Santa Pola only their second win of the season.

The Marineros were on the score sheet early too when, with five minutes gone, Nacho reacted first to a weak defensive clearance to side foot a looping shot over a stranded Horadada ‘keeper from the edge of the penalty area.

With the visitors battling back into the game well, Santa Pola doubled their lead courtesy of a simple finish by Ismael that had more than a hint of good fortune about it. More confusion in the Horadada back four saw the midfielder dance past the last blue shirted defender to slide the ball into an empty net beneath a despairing dive by Ros.

Just about adequate defending would have seen Horadada alright, they weren’t able to manage it, though, and instead found themselves two behind with half an hour gone. In truth, they weren’t playing badly and Santa Pola were made to work hard to preserve their cushion, particularly in midfield where crunching tackles from both sets of players were the order of the day.

Horadada got themselves right back in it on the stroke of half-time with, if he actually meant it, a sumptuous goal by club captain, Campillo. Raiding down the Santa Pola left, the Horadada stalwart had almost reached the penalty area when he unloaded a cross-cum-shot that evaded everyone and went in off the far post. It was the least the visitors deserved.

The second half, with no further goals, was simply a story of yellow cards and substitutions, although two moments of comedy goalkeeping by Ros might have seen Santa Pola add to their lead. At the other end, Ernesto went close late on when he hooked the ball over the Pola bar following a defensive scramble.

Next week Santa Pola travel to Almoradi while Horadada host Benferri.
