PUNTA PRIMA

Orihuela´s Partido Popular has this week issued a complaint about the state of the lift access to the beach at Punta Prima, accompanied by the rather dramatic declaration that “Orihuela Costa remains in oblivion”.

In a statement, the PP state that after almost 3 months, the lift which takes beachgoers down the high sided cliff “continues to deteriorate”, and that the “residents of Orihuela Costa are outraged at such abandonment”, considering that the PP first lodged the complaint in August of this year.

They continue, “Neither neighbour complaints or allegations of the PP have helped the government team to manage this issue”, and that the government are “deaf to the problems that arise in the area of Orihuela coastline”.

In the summer of 2010 the Partido Popular inaugurated the lift which solved the problem of inaccessibility at the beach of Punta Prima, where only large stairs previously existed. Having solved the problem, the beach achieved the recognition of the Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality with the Quality Q certificate of excellence.

Laying the responsibility firmly in the hands of the government team and the current councilor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, the PP claims that after a lot of investment the government is in no way compliant with the cleanliness or quality standards at this beach, and that the Orihuela Costa is at risk of losing the quality accreditations.

In response to the allegations, Martina Scheurer told The Leader that the lift is only open for use during the high season, and therefore would no longer have been in use since the 21st of September. However, during this time, a quote for repairing the lift, which is a non-standard installation and was made to measure, has been obtained and approved, and the repair was in fact ordered last week.
