A Belgian engineering student has presented his design at the University of Delft in the Netherlands this week, which could revolutionise the first response live-saving emergency process.

Perhaps often associated with death and killing, this new use of a pilotless aircraft, the Drone Ambulance, is capable of carrying four kilos of medical equipment, including a defibrillator, oxygen and mask, insulin for diabetics and other emergency supplies.

The vehicle, which is the only prototype of its kind in the world, can reach a speed of up to 100 kilometres per hour and can move so any location on as 12 square kilometre grid in less than a minute.

It is built from carbon fibre and various components which have been produced with the help of 3D printers. It is estimated that each unit would have cost around 15,000 euro, but would “save hundreds of lives over the next year”, according to the creator, Alec Momont.
