Crash-test dummies in America are piling on the pounds, in order for them to better represent the average size and shape of the humans they represent.

The dummies have already been wearing “fat suits” during a number of test scenarios, but now, the only American company who manufactures these life-saving mannequins are redesigning a whole range of thicker waist lined and bigger butted models.

Chris O’ Connor, CEO of Humanetics, said that “Studies show that obese drivers are 78 percent more likely to die in a car crash”, before explaining how the dummies were modelled on an average person weighing about 167 pounds and with a healthy body mass index. The company is now designing models based on the statistics of an average 270 pound person, with a BMI of 35, which, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, is morbidly obese.

The change has come about after fears that seat belts, air bags and other safety features, which are traditionally designed for thinner people, don’t fit or offer protection to “heavier” people in the same way.
