ORIHUELA POLICE BOOSTED BY 26 NEW OFFICERS

An additional 26 police officers joined the ranks of Orihuela´s Policía Local this week, with the number of agents looking out for the security of the municipality now standing at 150.

According to the acting councillor for public safety, Manuel Gallud, who is covering the post during the sick leave of his Los Verdes party colleague Monseratte Guillén, 8 of these officers were already working in the service as temporary staff, so in reality there are 18 new additions.

Adding a useful boost to the police, despite crime figures falling, 10 of the new 18 officers will be responsible for surveillance in the neighbourhoods of the city, with some of those already serving the city moving into roles in the surrounding villages, an area much criticised for a lack of policing in recent months.

The remaining 6 officers will be stationed on the Orihuela Costa, where there will now be a team of 40 officers, whilst the councillor also states that “We are seeking the possibility of two or three agents to form a special unit to monitor compliance with the bylaws”.

The 26 newly recruited officers were presented with their gold badges of the city in a ceremony held in Orihuela on Friday. The acting Mayor, Antonio Zapata, congratulated and welcomed the new officers and stressed the need for policing at a local level, explain “You are the tools for a peaceful coexistence between neighbours and this is achieved by not only fines but by trying to work closely with those neighbours”.
