We start this week with a bit of old news, although it´s only actually a week old, but with so much to talk about regarding the Remembrance build-up, there was no room to squeeze this is. It is however of huge significance, especially for fans of a certain hospital based drama on the BBC. The news is that Holby City fans will be delighted that Henrik Hansenn, Oliver Valentine and Estelle ‘Essie’ Harrison are all set to return to our screens next year.

It wasn´t that long ago we saw Essie head off to Germany to find her family, but Oliver went to find himself after the death of his new life Tara Lo, his twin sister being killed not too long before that, and the news, according to James Anderson who plays Ollie, is that “he’s older now – wiser, even – and I can’t wait to get stuck into playing this altogether more grown up Valentine to the one I left behind. Step up Oliver 2.0”.

As for Mr Hansenn, we last saw the former CEO and director of surgery choose family over medicine when he returned to Sweden to spend time with his son and grandson. However, Hanssen’s desire to bring his surgical brilliance back to Holby has got the better of him and Guy Henry explains how much he missed playing his character: “I’m so pleased to be reunited with Mr. Hanssen, he’s such a weird and wonderful character to play – I’ve missed him”. Of course, as for the role that he will play on his return, as well as the stories we will see his masterful manner lord over through the corridors of Holby, we will just have to wait and seen, or, as Guy puts it, “We don’t know what dark acts may have befallen Henrik during his time away in Sweden but I do believe that, when he looms down the corridors of Holby once more, his wit and his scalpel will be as incisive as ever! Can’t wait – see you on the ice!”

Whilst we´re on the subject of medical dramas, as filming wraps on Call the Midwife series four, the BBC have announced that they have already commissioned series five, which will consist of a Christmas special in 2015, followed by 8 hour long episodes in 2016, taking the nuns and midwives into 1961. But let´s not jump too far ahead yet, as we still have to get through this Christmas yet, and that is where we get the third Christmas special, with series four following on directly in January 2015. Joining the regular cast are Linda Bassett (East is East, Lark Rise to Candleford) as Nurse Phyllis Crane and Charlotte Ritchie (Life Of Riley, Fresh Meat) as Nurse Barbara Gilbert. Vanessa Redgrave will appear for the first time as Jennifer Worth in the Christmas special episode.

As for light entertainment, Itv has commissioned a brand new entertainment series, Get Your Act Together, which will see some of our best-loved stars join forces with some of the world’s most talented variety acts to put on a unique performance. Each week, host Stephen Mulhern will be joined by five different celebrities who battle it out to learn jaw dropping talents, from contortion to fire dancing, ventriloquism to acrobatics, juggling to plate spinning. Among the “celebrities” taking part are Ann Widdecombe, Brian McFadden, Danielle Lloyd, James Bolam , Oliver Mellor, Sherrie Hewson, Roxy Shahidi, Jedward, Ruth Madoc, Sinitta, Phil Tufnell, Natalie Anderson, Matthew Wolfenden, Nigel Havers, Chip, Claire Richards, Gaby Roslin, Gareth Thomas and Nina Wadia. Alongside them are award winning acts, including Penn and Teller, Catwall Acrobats, Les Beaux Frere, Shaolin Monks, Circus of Men, Les Bubb mime and The Moscow State Circus.

If it´s variety you´re looking for then you might also be pleased to know that Michael McIntyre is to host The Royal Variety Performance 2014, which takes place on Thursday the 13th of November, to be screened on Itv in December. Global superstars Dame Shirley Bassey and Bette Midler will be joined by the likes of Demi Lovato and Ed Sheeran, in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Also taking part in what promises to be an unforgettable evening of music, theatre, comedy and dance will be BRIT Award winner Ellie Goulding, Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro, the cast of multi-award winning musical Miss Saigon, critically acclaimed tenor Alfie Boe and Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Inala. Comedy comes from acclaimed stand-up Russell Kane, British Comedy Award winner Jack Whitehall, Sarah Millican and Trevor Noah, and the magical talents of Stephen Mulhern.

As for this coming weekend, on the BBC and for one week only, Strictly Come Dancing returns to the holy grail of ballroom as the show is broadcast live from Blackpool’s world famous Tower Ballroom. In a special standalone episode of Casualty, “Casualty: Deadfall”, a suspicious death leads Lily to a murder mystery that puts her life in danger. Over on ITV, I´m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here returns on Sunday for its 14th season, once again presented by Ant & Dec. On The Chase: Celebrity Special on Saturday, star of Itv comedy Benidorm, Jake Canuso, along with actress Gerogia Taylor, who has of course been in Casualty, and Jo Whiley and Marcus Brigstocke take on the challenge.
