Due to essential restoration on the Vicente Garcia pitch (necessary to keep it in tip top condition), Torry played the first of a few home matches at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.

They were looking to bounce back from 2 heavy reversals on the road, but their opponents Paterna have had a very impressive away record of 4 victories and 2 draws, from 7 games played this season.

However, despite not having won so far in November, picking up just a single point from 3 matches, Torry were still only 5 points from top spot going into this div 3 encounter. And it was Ferran who closed the gap to a couple as he got the only goal of the game against Paterna on Sunday evening.

With both Rafa Gomez and Martin out injured, and neither defender Cristian Sanchez nor striker Steve Ekedi making the starting line up, Galiana confused more than a few with his team selection and when Paterna shaved the post with an early header it certainly looked ominous for the home sides chances but as Torry grew into the game the opportunities started coming.

It was not the free flowing football that we hoped we might see on a perfect Astroturf surface but the all important aspect of the visit from Paterna was to get points on the board and close the gap with the playoff places and after the early scare the home side went about the task by allowing the visitors little room

On the quarter hour mark an excellent combination between Borja and Cesar saw the former Elche man just head over. Torry were beginning to get on top and the signs were looking good. They were restricting Paterna to occasional raids and with the majority of the ball we were all hoping that elusive goal might come.

And it did midway through the half, following a decisive move Ferran hit a low shot in a crowded area. The ball took a wicked deflection and looped over the keeper before quickly dropping just under the bar and into the back of the net. We had to look to the referee for confirmation, with many thinking the ball had cleared the bar, but they all count, and the home side took a deserved lead after their earlier decent build up.

Unfortunately as the Torry pattern began to develop it was quickly disrupted with full back Berna making way for Ruben after being the subject of a nasty foul but with few further opportunities the sides went into the interval with the home side holding a narrow advantage.

There was little to cheer in the second period with most of the entertainment emanating from the stand where manager Galiana was serving the 2nd of a 3 match suspension. As Torry continued to retain possession the keepers were only occasionally troubled.

Torry should have extended their lead following an Adrian corner on 68 mins. All it needed was a toe as the ball sped through a crowded area but none was forthcoming. A 40 yard drive from Oscar went close in added time and as Paterna then broke to mount a rare incursion into the Torry half it needed an excellent save from Oscar to keep all three points at home. Final score FCD Torrevieja 1 Paterna CF 0.

Next weekend’s game against Alicante based side Jove Espanol is being played on Saturday evening kicking off at 6pm. Keep an eye on the club website for further details.
