SPANISH HEALTH MINISTER RESIGNS

The Spanish Minister for Health, Ana Mato, issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon announcing her resignation from the post.

The announcement came hours after the judge presiding over the infamous Gürtel case, in which Mato is considered to have personally benefited from her ex-husband’s business with the plot of Francisco Correa.

Mato has faced criticism through her career, partly due to massive cuts in spending on public health, forcing pensioners and the infirm to pay for prescriptions, closing hospitals and clinics and reducing the numbers of ambulances serving the public, to recent controversy over the handling of the Ebola crisis.

Although not convicted of any crime in connection with the case, her resignation is on account that she doesn´t want to further damage the public´s opinion of the ruling Partido Popular government, rocked with scandal after scandal during their current administration.
